ITF Junior Tennis Guide: Rankings, Rules & Path to Pro

What Is ITF Junior Tennis?

ITF Junior Tennis is also known as the World Tennis Tour Juniors or ITF Junior Circuit. It is an elite international tournament for young tennis players aged around 13 to 18 years. The tournament is organized by the ITF, or International Tennis Federation. The tournament is responsible for connecting talented juniors around the world.

The ITF plays the role of a global body that governs the organization of tennis tournaments for young players. Some of the core responsibilities of the body include:

  • Overseeing all ITF Junior tournaments, including entry-level events (J30 or J60) and high-grade competitions (like the J500, Junior Grand Slams, and the ITF Junior Masters).
  • Maintaining the ITF Junior World Rankings. This report is based on the 52-week system along with the best results of players in both singles & doubles.
  • Setting rules & regulations, including tournament acceptance, age eligibility, tournament structure, and code of conduct.

If you wish to play on the ITF Junior Circuit, you should abide by the following eligibility criteria:

  • The player should be at least 13 years of age by the first day of the tournament.
  • Athletes are also expected to compete until the end of the calendar year upon turning 18.
  • Players who are below the age of 10 years are not eligible for international events or tournaments.

How the ITF Junior Tennis Ranking System Works

Aspiring young players in the UAE need to understand the ITF Junior Tennis ranking system. Every player gets ranking points by advancing through a series of ITF Junior events, including Grade A events (like the Junior Grand Slams) and Grades 1-5 (J500, J30, J300).

Grade A tennis tournaments offer around 500 points for winning a singles match. At the same time, Grade 1/j300 events offer 300 points. For points, doubles matches also count. They account for only 25% of the point value. The Combined Ranking System of the ITF adds the player’s best singles points and one-quarter of the player’s six best doubles points.

When a player is in the top-10, -50, or -100 of the ITF Junior rankings, many opportunities come up, including entries for Junior Grand Slams, junior-exempt wildcards, and international sponsorships.

The Path to Pro: From ITF Juniors to the ATP/WTA Tour

Typically, younger tennis players in the UAE start with local junior tournaments before they join the ITF Junior Tennis group. When they earn ITF Junior Ranking points, it helps them get relevant opportunities to access ATP/WTA qualifying events and other accelerator programmes.

For example, Coco Gauff started playing the ITF Junior at a quite young age (13 years). Eventually, in 2017, she reached the US Open Junior Finals and the French Open Junior title in 2018. She even became the World No. 1 Junior before she moved to professional events by the age of 15.

Junior tennis tournaments tend to focus on age-specific development. On the other hand, professional events ask for a higher standard and have a tougher tournament structure. Rules & Regulations of Playing ITF Junior Tennis

If you wish to compete in ITF Junior Tennis, you should be between the ages of 13 & 18 years. All entrants are expected to register for the IPN membership, fulfill the mandatory ITF Academy courses, and pay the annual fee before using the entry system.

Most sport formats follow the standard ITF Tennis rules. For example, singles are played in the best-of-three sets with tiebreaks taking place at 6-6. At the same time, doubles matches feature pro sets or match tiebreaks. It would depend on the tournament grade. Players who are below the age of 18 would require parental consent along with a signed medical release to ensure registration according to the ITF junior tennis calendar.

How to Start Playing ITF Junior Tennis

  • Step 1: Starting with national events: You should aim to compete in UAE Tennis Federation junior tournaments to understand match play and build confidence.
  • Step 2: Registering for IPIN: Create your IPIN (International Player Identification Number) through the ITF website.
  • Step 3: Searching for regional ITF tournaments: You should aim to compete in regional J60 or J30 grade events. In the UAE, the Dubai Duty Free J60 ITF and the J30 Fujairah West Asia Cup are impressive opportunities.
  • Step 4: Getting experience & ranking: It is important to perform consistently in these events to get ITF junior ranking points.
