The French Open vs Wimbledon: A Comparison

This year, both the French Open and Wimbledon grabbed the attention of several celebrities who marked their presence on the court to witness the matches. While some of the legendary celebrities such as David Beckham and Princess Maria Olympia from Greece graced the Wimbledon court, international celebrities like Paul Wesley and Ben Stiller created a sensation with their presence at the French Open.

While both French Open and Wimbledon are two majors in the tennis world, both are quite different from each other in many aspects. Let us discuss some of the common factors here to draw a comparison between both these tournaments.

The Court Surface

The very first thing that comes to your mind while discussing Wimbledon vs the French Open is the court surface. While most tournaments today have hard court surfaces to offer convenience to the players, these two tournaments have maintained their traditional court surfaces even today. This is one of the prime reasons why these two tournaments are also considered the most challenging ones.

The Wimbledon court is known for its lush grassy surface. It can get extremely difficult for the players to play if the grassy surface gets even a little bit of dampness due to factors such as dew. Among various players, Roger Federer has been one of the tennis stars from dominated the Grass court of Wimbledon.

On the other hand, the clay court surface of the French Open is equally challenging. Often the clay surface can impact the behaviour of the player and can change the player’s game style. Rafael Nadal has showcased his excellent grip on the clay court of Roland Garros or the French Open.

The Origin

It is quite interesting to know about the origin of both the tournaments to establish a potential difference between both of them. Wimbledon is also known as the father of tennis tournaments as it is the oldest tournament across the globe. The first-ever Wimbledon Tournament took place in 1877 and since then it has become a tradition for the best tennis players to win at least one Wimbledon title.

While the French Open is not as old as Wimbledon, it is also quite old and has an almost equal reputation just as Wimbledon. The French Open also known as Roland Garros first started in 1891 and since then it has become one of the most important tournaments for tennis professionals globally.

The Trophies

One thing common between the trophies of both tournaments is that the winners do not have to get the actual trophy. The winners get a replica of the actual trophy, which is comparatively smaller in size than the real one.

Let us first talk about the French Open Tournament. Winners of the Men’s Singles take home the Coupe des Mousquetaires trophy while the winner of the Women’s Singles carry the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen trophy. Even though a replica of the actual trophy, both of these are manufactured of pure gold and fine decorations carved on them.

Now moving towards the Wimbledon Tournament, the winner of the Men’s Single is awarded the Wimbledon Trophy which is a cup made up of silver gilt and has a lid with pineapple. While this is a replica, the original cup has a height of 18.5 inches and 7.5 inches in diameter.

The winner at the Women’s Single of Wimbledon is in contrast to the cup trophy for the men. It is called the Venus Rosewater Dish and resembles a huge silver plate in a gold shade. It seems the organizers have this thought of offering more decorative trophies to women compared to men.

Apart from the trophies, the winners also get prize money according to the titles achieved. So far, the Wimbledon prize money is higher than the French Open. However, the amount keeps on changing accordingly for both tournaments.

The Game Format

The Wimbledon Draw has 4 total rounds for the players to play including quarter-finals, semi-finals, and then the finals. The same format is followed for men, women, and doubles. Also, the same format is followed for the special wheelchair players at Wimbledon.

The French Open is considered difficult not only because of its clay court but also because of its game format. Both men and women must go through seven rounds in the French Open. Men must win at least 3 sets out of 5 sets while women must win at least 2 sets out of 3 to win the tournament.

Dress Code

Another major aspect that differentiates Wimbledon not only from the French Open but also from many other tournaments is its dress code. French Open does not have any specific dress code for the players while Wimbledon is extremely strict with its dress code. The players must wear an almost white outfit on the court of Wimbledon. In a recent amendment, women are allowed now to wear undershorts of darker shades, otherwise, everything else has to be white.

While you may find many things similar between these 2 majors, there are also many ways in which they differ from each other. Even with so many differences, it is hard to state which one is more reputed. Both are well-reputed and best in their own zones.
